Guys,
I'm experiencing an odd problem. Hopefully some of you less electrically
challenged can help me out.
I recently installed a new stereo in my TR4. It worked fine for the first
couple of days, then quit. It wasn't completely dead, the display backlight
still worked, and there was a faint "thump" when I switched it on, but no
actual display or sound. I unplugged and re-plugged the wiring harness, and
it worked perfectly. I figured it had just been a loose connection, until
it acted up again today. It started out as an odd clicking sound that only
occurred while the engine was running, then after a couple of minutes, the
thing went semi-dead again. This time, I simply disconnected the ground
terminal on the battery temporarily, and this seemed to "reboot" the thing.
It works fine again now.
The stereo has a typical two power supply connection. One is switched and
the other is constant (to retain programmed stations and the clock I
assume). The constant power supply seems to be the culprit, since I've
confirmed that the switched power supply does indeed cut out when the
ignition is turned off. I didn't run the constant power supply line
directly from the positive battery terminal, but instead ran it from the A1
terminal on the voltage control box.
I switched the car from positive to negative ground a couple of years ago,
and the stereo I had in the car before this one worked flawlessly; however,
it did have some kind of extra filter built into the power portion of the
wiring harness.
Any ideas or suggestions?
