I dismantled mine at home with little problem. I used a crow bar and pried
up the straps to the point that the leafs would clear to be separated. Wire
brushed them with the drill and primed and painted. Be sure to use grease
between the leafs when reassembling and don't forget that the passenger side
has an extra leaf. I used a bench vice to reclamp the straps.
Like Scott, I also dismantled and painted my springs. First, the bands were
opened with a cold chisel and BFH. I then had a frame shop press out the
spring eye bushings, then they were de-rusted using an angle grinder and paint
stripping pad, then painted with black POR-15 after treatment with Metal
Prep. I greased them before reassembly and had the frame shop press in new
spring eye bushings and press the bands together nice and tight. It was a
revelation to have springs that actually worked.
Don't ask me about the two weeks it took to figure out how to remove one of
the spring eye bolts or what a MAPP torch can do to carpeting on the other
side of the floor pan...
