To add to Joe's reply that ECU/ignition mapping tolerates an assortment of
fuel octanes . . . in a majority of the cases, a manufacturers' premium
"mandate" is actually a "recommendation' to realize the full performance
potential of the engine.  Because the lower octane fuel is more easily
ignited than the premium, using it in an engine designed for less ignitable
premium means that the ECU must retard spark ignition relative to the
premium scenario.  Consequently, less of the 87 octane fuel's energy
potential is available for power delivery.  Your situation is even more
complicated because you have turbo boost compressing the intake charge.
