Sounds like either the mainshaft or the input shaft has been pushed into the
case, until it's jammed into the other shaft.

Both front and rear bearings should have circlips on the outside, to prevent
them from being pushed into the case.  Both shafts should have distance pieces
on them, and circlips, to prevent them from being pushed through the bearing.
One of those components must be missing or not seated into it's groove.

Or possibly you need thicker distance piece(s).
