So, is it worth the extra effort to make all the wires as short as possible
for the best performance?

Have a new dizzy one the way so I will be going through this process next
week.

It works out to a 1000ohms per inch

IMO, no.  But it wouldn't hurt to use an ohmmeter, to be sure the screw is
making good contact with the center conductor.
