No, making the wire shorter won't improve performance.  Make them the right
length, so they don't flop around excessively but also aren't forced around
sharp corners, etc.

My personal preference is to use solid-core wires with discrete resistors at
the plugs; but that is only because I've had problems in the past with the
"carbon core" wires eroding and eventually failing where the screws pierce
them.
