i don't recall you saying that. but your some what true. we used the main body
and all of the annulus.
some did suggest that it could not be done and others
said it was not worth doing.
 
yes you can check the pressure from under the
O/D but we did not have a gage and one would need the motor running to build
up pressure. so we just selected "on" and observed it kick into gear.
we will
drive it before the week is out before we put all the dog house and
ancillaries back in.
but we did have success.

Sounds to me more like you
used some parts from a Volvo J-type.  I've done
exactly the same thing, my
comment before was that they were a cheap source
of parts.

You lost me here.  Should be quite possible
to check the pressure with the
gearbox installed in the car, even without
removing the tunnel.  I believe
they deliberately moved the test port to the
bottom just to facilitate this.
