Actually, if you expand the equation, you may get a different answer. How much pollution is created, energy and resources used in the manufacture of the new car that is going to replace the obsolete

That's a very good point, but it really only applies if your older car is your ONLY car (for example, I have two cars, both 1967 or older). If, like most people, your old LBC is a second (or third) c

A good and subtle point, Gary. Similar to the also-subtle point about electric cars - where does the energy to generate all that electricity for recharging come from?! Thankfully, it appears that que

Very, very good point. But my gut feeling is that hybrids are definitely a step in the right direction, and it's encouraging to see that Toyota can't build the Prius fast enough to meet demand. They

My problem with the hybrids is that they don't seem all that much more efficient than, say, a Jetta GTI, with real fuel mileage in the 50mpg range. I also remember that a long time ago ('80s perhaps)

Really? The EPA rates the Jetta with the 2.0L four cylinder engine at 24 city and 31 highway. These figures compare to the EPA ratings of 60mpg city and 51 highway for the Prius. The recent article o

You got me wondering about Jetta mileage, so I went and checked the EPA ratings. A diesel 5-spd Jetta is rated 47/36; the gas version is 31/24. We all know that the EPA ratings are pie-in-the-sky num

There's nothing special about the traction battery in the Prius. It's a bunch of Nickel Metal Hydride "D" cells and it's warranteed for 100,000 miles. What will probably happen is that by the time th

Just to add to the discussion. I drove an 89 Honda Civic CRX HF for five years and averaged about 52mpg city and 60mpg highway. It was great to go 450 - 500 miles without worrying about getting gas.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been out of town. I also made a typo, replace GTI with TDI. The TDI without an automatic gets 50mpg in the real world with real drivers, mix of city and highway. It's a
