I was always told: backfire or "popping" on acceleration was an intake leak, backfire on deceleration was an exhaust leak. I'm sure there can be other reasons as well, such as too rich of a mixture?

For the Shroud attachment, I would reccomend a product made for the purpose like 3M flexible seam sealer. This comes in caulk tubes, is easy to dispense and has other uses as you are putting your car

Usually you will find that a "misfire", backfire (noise) during de-acceleration based activities will be an exhaust leak. A similar noise on acceleration will be an intake system leak. Hope that help
