My 1963 TR4 has that weight as well. Like you, I was curious and asked the list about it a few years ago when I rebuilt my engine. Based on the responses I received, there were some cars that had it

I have seen discussion of this before, and I believe the consensus was that the weight serves as a vibration damper. Evidently it only appeared on 4's. One of life's little mysteries, I guess.... Reg

I just pulled the gearbox on my '67 TR-4A and it has the weight also. Gearbox number is correct for my car so this little mystery must have been included on some TR-4A's. Jim '67 TR-4A '68 GT6 '73 Sp

Tom, That weight is common on TR4A's and as I recall it was to help eliminate the shift lever rattles that would sometimes occur. Lots of cars run without it and leaving it off will not result in any
