Since it wants to run with the starter engaged, sounds like a spark problem. Is the main lead to the ignition still through the ballast resistor? If so, you may not have enough voltage to get a spark

You can do a static pressure test on the system. The tester is a modified radiator cap that air can be blown into. Blow it up to 5 PSI or so and see where it is leaking. The water pump pumps water in
