i may be wrong but--there's nothing that prevents you from running unleaded gas now, the older engines didn't have hardened valve seats in the heads and allowed carbon to build up not allowing a good

Lots of people have been running lots of old cars, trucks, tractors, snowmobiles, and other contributors to your cylinder index on unleaded gas for a long time now. The general consensus is that unle

1972 and newer chevy small block heads had hardened seats for running unleaded gas, unless the 327 you have is a hi compression engine you shouldnt have any problem running unleaded gas, performance

I was told without hardened exhaust valve seats, they (valve seats) would be damaged with unleaded gas. In my old IH Travelall, they said if you burned one tank of leaded out of four, you'd be ok. Do

My mid-60s 283 was rebuilt about 12-15 years ago and never run. Is there a way that I can pull the valve cover and tell if the seats were hardened or do I have to pull the heads? BobK 51 5-window (in

Bob you will have to pull the heads to tell. There is a chance they were put in when the eng was rebuilt, use a additive if you are not sure. Wal mart has it, I used it for some time untill I decided

I had my (the latest one) 235 head rebuilt back about 1984. I honestly can't remember if I specified hardened seats or not. But anyway, I've put well over 70,000 miles on it with unleaded gas. With t

I have a '68 327 Chevelle engine. I have done nothing to "make it run on unleaded" except use a higher octane. Jon i may be wrong but--there's nothing that prevents you from running unleaded gas now,

You bring up a good point about hurting the eng slow. If you don`t use the eng to pull loads over extended trips you can get by on the unleaded gas for a good deal of miliage before having any valve

You might also need to take out one of the exhaust valves (the only ones that have the hardened seats; intakes don't need them-don't get that hot). The seats are under the valves and may not be visib

This is an old myth and has been debunked by many experts in the field. There is absolutely nothing different about running older engines on unleaded or leaded. I don't have the sites in front of me,

I used to have, until 2 years ago, a '68 Impala with a 327. Car is gone, but the engine will go into my '57. Mine was like the 327 from the Camaro in the '56 in that it is a 250 horsepower version. H
