In the process of installing air conditioning, I have had to replace the old reliable generator with a 1-wire alternator. Haven't gotten to drive it yet, and am just wondering if I will see any diffe

Just make sure you use a smaller pulley. An alternator has to spin faster to put out a charge at idle speed. If you use the generator pulley on an alternator, it will work but you'll see a discharge

Jack's point about pulley size brings up an interesting point. I put a single wire alternator on my 57 GMC V8 5+ years ago. I am very happy with it's overall performance, however at idle speed (with

I have done a lot of these conversions and use an internally regulator GM alternator. Use whatever pulley comes on the alternator. It will charge at at full output at about 1,500 engine rpms, maybe 3

I beleive the theory behind this is that the water flow is going through the radiator at a slower rater therefore allowing more time for heat to be disippated or removed from the water. wayne Wayne

If I remember correctly from my auto school days just the opposite is true. Alternators put out approx. 14v @ idle speed where as most generators do not. ____________________________________________

That's correct, but if you use a pulley sized for a generator it will not spin the alternator fast enough to charge at idle speed. Jack -- Original Message -- From: "Byron Schluter" <b_schluter@yahoo

The biggest reason to change over is efficiency...the alternator charges at much lower RPMs than a Generator does. For highway driving, a generator is fine, but stop and go will allow a battery to we
