When I converted to OD, I tried Redline gear oil in the untested, just-put-in tranny. The OD slipped under torque when cold, once warmed, slippage was reduced. Whether it was the oil or a worn out OD

Are you sure your clutch isn't just slipping? The OD joint that usually slips is when the cone clutch is on the brake ring. That should only be in OD, which shouldn't happen in 1st or 2nd. -- Trevor

As Donald said, you shouldn't be able to use O/D in 1st or 2nd gear - it's not designed to work. The power to the O/D switch should be routed as follows: 12V -> little switch on top front of gearbox

So, now you know that you're not supposed to be able to engage the overdrive in 1st and 2nd. In my limited studies of these units, it's not that the engine produces too much power. Not by a long shot
