It's been interesting reading all the responces to my posting about the vacuum retard system on the TR6. But back to the important questions. Given the current setup (vacuum retard fed directly from

Wasn't the vacuum retard installed to meet emissions? If so, you're making your car a worse polluter than it already is. Jim Ruwaldt '72 TR6 CC79338U(being restored) Bloomington, IN P.S.: Like others

The vacuum retard was an emissions related item. With the (broken) switch bypassed I don't think it's doing anything. That's the real question here. What is the vacuum retard doing with the switch by

Mark, I thought you said your new distributor was mechanical advance only...? If not and you have the vacuum retard hooked up directly to the intake manifold, it could be retarding your timing - it d

FYI: Vvacuum retard switches on most cars would not operate until the engine warmed up. The EGR on many cars was also set up the same way, with a set of switches activated by time or engine temperatu

Is anyone aware of an inexpensive source (i.e. less expensive than the 'big three') for the vacuum retard unit for a 74 TR6 distributor? Most of our usual sources are anywhere from $35-$40; surely th

Yes, emissions, but also a smoother running car at idle for the mass (American) market. An engine running with a lot of advance at idle is difficult to adjust for a smooth even idle. In Europe, drive

The thermostatic valve in the upper radiator hose simply bleeds off vacuum when the engine gets hot so it automatically raises the idle speed -- supposedly to prevent overheating by drawing more air

Why would you want to retard the engine. This is the number one thing that robs power. A unhooked vacuum line to the distributor will not cause any damage, just lower your idle a little bit. Aaron Jo

Aaron, I don't want to rob the engine. My TR was lacking plumbing and I was interested in what the orginal intent of the retard via the thermostatic unit was. Marty Romagni 74 TR6
