Suddenly it seems my e-mails aren't going through. So if this is a repeat, I apologize. I'm nearly ready to pull the engine and tranny out of the bug-eye, but I don't see how to detach the drive shaf

The drive shaft just slips out of the back of the tranny. Make sure you drain the tranny first or you will have a mess. You can also unbolt the shaft from the diff and pull it out from behind. Again,

Probably best to unbolt from the diff, then pull down and out from the tranny, after draining the tranny. You'll be under there anyway, I think, to undo other things, IIRC. Cheers, Derf

Might as well, since you will need to unbolt it from the diff at some point to re-install. Might want to scribe the two flanges at the diff so that you don't have to wonder whether you are putting t

I have always wondered the importance of why we have to mark the driveshaft flange where it attaches to the diff. flange. I have often replaced driveshafts and just simply attached them how they alli

There could possibly be some balance issues there. But, the Spridget flange only goes on two ways, not four, so you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right. I've marked some and not marked others and

No. It does not make any difference. The driveshaft is balanced as a unit and simply refuses to care about the trans or the diff. However, there is always the guy who thinks that it makes a differen

I understand. I have often wondered about that as I have never marked much of anything and just replaced them as that was easier at the time than replacing U-V joints. Thanks, Mike C --Original Messa

If you're pulling the engine and tranny together, consider tying the drive shaft to the trans with a piece of wire, unbolt the d-shaft at the diff and pull the whole mess together. Depending on what

I think he's putting in the 5 speed tranny. Re-sticking the d'shaft can be a hassle, but some masking tape usually works.

On American cars, it can make a big difference. The Sprite driveshaft is so tiny, I'm not sure you can get into much trouble. Besides that, unless it's been clearly marked already, I never assume ol

The driveshaft is tiny, but if it is out of balance or slightly bent it will make a big difference. I've had the driveshafts of the Austin, bugeye, and Morris woody balanced and checked for true. The

If you think about it, the only thing that they balance is the driveshaft when they balance a driveshaft. They balance the driveshaft so that it doesn't vibrate etc. when in motion. I have yet to see

Yes, it is important that the driveshaft not be out of balance. When changing the u-joints, you should be sure to get the two yokes of it back into the same relationship they started at to preserve
