I definitely understand, but my question is this: suppose that you
overflow the tank upon fill-up. I'm pretty sure that there is an
overflow valve or something that would allow excess gas to drain to the
ground. The leak while more than a drip initially does NOT remain. So,
other than upsetting some of the earth's balance, I think I not dealing
with a leak, but with simply an overflow situation. However, I need
confirmation that there is such a valve.

from a couple of months ago. Found a small puddle of gas under the car
and
some dripping, quickly drained the tank, came back later and gas was
still
dripping, found A GALLON of gas underneath the spare. Lucky I didn't go
boom! There was a pinhole leak in the tank.
