Gene----A couple of things could be the reason that you have to turn
your distributor so far ClockWise to get it to run.
1) The sparkplug wires might need to be moved a station or two CCW. (#1
plug wire is ideally at 7 o'clock)

2) The distributor drive gear slots should be at "twenty to two" on the
clock, when #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Note that the
slots should be closer to the engine, rather than to the left fender.
(There is a subtle difference, but an important one) If this slot is not
clocked as above, the distributor drive dog will not drop down into
place, to be timed as you wish...and, so the tach cable can be attached
to only have a modest bend as it goes in thru the firewall.

#3) To get the dist. drive gear clocked properly it is necessary to
remove the dist. pedestal, so you can lift and turn the helical cut gear
to a new position on the camshaft drive gear.

There is an illustration of this in the Bentley manual.
