Ron,
If you're feeling ambitious, drain the oil, remove the oil pan and 
scrape out any gunk that has settled. If you're not, simply drain and 
refill the engine, run it for a while and change it. Engine cleaners 
scare me, mostly because they are not good lubricants. More harm 
could come from their use than any good they might do. If you suspect 
the engine is really full of crud, the safest thing would be to 
disassemble it.
