Paul,

I will take the opposite side here. I would strongly recommend dual axles
and trailer brakes. First, the combination make life a lot easier on the
tow vehicle; second, many states require that all trailers over a certain
weight rating be equipped with brakes. Depending on the state and year of
the trailer, a break-away brake system may be required.

I bought an 8 x 16 (about 9.5 x 21 with the tongue, beaver tail and fenders)
auto-trailer about 15 years ago for the TR6. It has carried everything from
furniture to building materials and even the TR once or twice; it has been
from Ft. Wayne to Fairbanks and back. The 7,000 # axle capacity and
independent brakes have given peace of mind, safety and flexibility in using
the trailer.

A 2600 # car on a 1000 # trailer behind a short wheel based 3500 # tow
vehicle can add new meaning to "the tail wagging the dog."

As for where to buy, you should be able to find several places in the DC
area, let your fingers do the walking. I do recall one place over in
College Park near the intersection of Greenbelt Road and US 1 (Rhode
Island?) that handled open and enclosed auto trailers.
