Mike,
I had the same issue and followed advice given on the list. I took my float
out and set it on the back deck (in the middle of the summer, though) and let
the gas evaporate out of the float. It took about four days. I figure I have
several years before I need to take action again.
My real purpose for taking the float out was to replace the sending unit
gasket (again), to stop the leaky gas tank. Also following the list's advice,
I used the Hylomar gasket treatment (this time). Leak gone. Gas smell gone.
Float empty. It didn't make my wife love the car, but she can't complain of a
gas smell anymore!
