head deck thickness on a particular engine allowed them mill the head
and cover their tracks by building up the cam cover rail with weld and
remachining it to the proper height. Instant compression ratio boost,
undetectable in the tech shed. Result: a podium finish at the Runoffs.
And they were far, far from alone in finding that "unfair advantage"
that

This sounds like some sort of urban legend. While it may pass a
simplistic outside measurement, it certainly would not pass a
compression check much less cc'ing the head. SS Runoffs racing was
highly debatable until they cracked down in the early 90s. But when they
did decide to crack down, it wasn't unusual to have to go all the way to
5th place to find a legal car. And they did. And the cheating ended. And
then the Neons came. But that's a different story...
