When I was in the sixth grade, my mom and dad borrowed a motorhome and took
my sister and me and our two dogs Lulu and Lollipop to Salina, KS for the
nationals. Of course, with the CB on we got to hear all sorts of funny stuff
as the truckers laid their eyes on Li'l Stroker, the Lotus 7A, for the
first time. They seemed genuinely frightened. That's when dad started lying
about Li'l Stroker's top speed. 200 miles an hour down the straight-a-way,
he said. It made them happy to hear that, he told us.

About 40 miles outside of Elko, NV, the front right wheel of the motorhome
fell off. Blown lugnuts. We sat on I-80 for about eight hours it seemed, way
past night fall. We were completely stranded and scared. I just remember my
mom cooking up some rice, but none of us could really eat. What saved us was
this one trucker guy on a CB. He said he'd do this thing, and I can't
remember what it's called, but he'd pass the message up to truckers ahead,
then they'd pass it along, and so on and so forth. The message finally
reached a tow company in Elko, so I don't know how many hours later, I swear
it was eight, this guy in a bigrig tow truck came and towed the motorhome
along with Li'l Stroker all the way to Elko. Dad sat in the front, my sister
and I were in that back little bedroom, and Lulu and Lolli had to ride in
the motorhome.

We lived in Elko for about three days until the part finally arrived,
finally made it to Nationals, and my mom and dad won DPL and DP that year.
On the way back home, somewhere in Wyoming, we saw the same trucker guy who
radioed ahead for help for us. So Dad got to thank him. That was pretty
neat.
