Maybe when you don't pray, maybe you're not as appreciative, but then again
your expectations aren't as high? :)

Several years ago, I was staying with my friend Tim's family for a few days.
His father is a Baptist minister down in Ventura. Well, my friend's mother
is this incredibly lovely lady. She's kind of a mixture of June Cleaver and
an electrical engineer. I was just totally amazed when I discovered that
this woman who so modestly left little snacks for us in every room had also
completely done the electrical wiring in the house.

She had recently had a mammogram, and she and her whole family were very
concerned that maybe she was developing breast cancer. She came home from
the hospital ecstatic. The results were negative, she was cancer free. We
had to go to lunch to celebrate.

So, we piled into the family station wagon and headed over to Taco Bell. We
were sitting at the table with our Burrito Supremes and Nacho del Grandes,
but before we could start, we had to join hands in prayer.

I'm not a terribly religious person. I grew up devoted to the AutoCross.
We'd just go to McDonald's or out for pizza and chow down without ever
thinking about it.

As we were sitting there holding hands in the Taco Bell, Bev began asking
the Lord to please bless this food, and she did so quite loudly. Tim rolled
his eyes, which is often a normal involuntary reaction of sons watching
their mothers. I don't think he went to Taco Bell with her very often.
Personally, it had just never occurred to me to be so thankful for Taco
Bell. I was a bit surprised, but I decided to just go with it, because she
was so sincere. Suddenly, we weren't just eating Taco Bell food. It somehow
became a lot more important. I was suddenly very grateful for being able to
eat at all, and I was so happy for Bev's health, and that I could sit in a
Taco Bell with Bev and Tim on this nice summer's day. It was a very humbling
experience and a Burrito Supreme never tasted so good.
