My .02. We commonly pre-register entrants. It cuts down on the aggravation
at registration (ours just check in to verify their class/number, get
teched, and go) and it gives you a good idea about trophy numbers and
balancing out the heats. I usually enter the drivers with my home office
computer, save the file, and take it to the event. I think it relieves you
of some headaches at registration.
BTW, I've just finished testing a program called autoCRON. Nebraska has
used it for a year and it's really cool. It's on the Windows platform, so
it used a mouse (no F keys to remember), networks so you can have multiple
people registering, and has a terrific announcers screen - current run, list
of class members and their times, best time and time to win - all updated
automatically for the announcer. I'm using "for real" for the first time at
the Street Solo Nationals in Cheyenne in June and, based on the testing I've
done, I know we're going to love it.
The BEST PART - it's so intuitive and user friendly, it can be taught to an
orangutan in about 10 minutes. There is hope I could actually get out of
the timing trailer ;)

We have a hub that can accept up to 8 PC's running registration at once,
even
after the event starts!!! As long as the PC has a network card and runs
windows, it can be used. At larger events I bring in my laptop and we have a
total of 5 PC's. By the way, our Ovislink 8 port Hub cost $99.00 and works
perfectly. You can get even better deals at Office Depot for a complete
network kit. Go for the 100mb cards if you can afford it as the network
response is noticeably better.
Some clubs do preregistration, but I find it a logistical nightmare.
