Katie, you could trade the car for a 444 Volvo, so that no one could doubt
your heart is in the right place. This is the acknowledged staff car for
committed anti-car folks, plus it is a pre-smog car, so there are no nasty
altercations with the government every two years. Since your heart is in the
right place, air pollution doesn't matter and can be ignored. Mileage is
more difficult. Then you could make end tables of the surplus tires or
better yet, a small alter with three stacked tires. Sit in meditation on the
fourth (traditionally called a full lotus but in this case a full Kumho so
as not to confuse your Mom) and chant something private but meaningful,
like, "Brake earlier, brake earlier, brake...". You get the idea. To round
out the experience, you can burn incense or timing slips in the one of the
hubs. Maybe gong an end link on something. You are going to have to be
patient because this is at best a makeshift path to enlightenment. I must
confess my skepticism that it will work at all. The Sanskrit word "duhka" is
literally translated as "a wheel out of kilter" and it best describes the
sense of want and need that haunts all of us. Perhaps, instead of a
wholesale renouncement of self (was that really "you" driving all these
years?") or following your neighbors path, all you really need for
enlightenment is a good alignment. See you the 16th. Be there; be centered.
Antonio
