That's generally a wiring problem. Start by check the ground connection.

Yes, it is an easy job to add more fiberglas inside the console. If it is
really bad, you may want to glas in a piece of steel or something else that
will give it lots of support. The switches will pop out. Pry carefully so that
you don't damage the fiberglas around the opening or better yet, if you can
get at the back of them, push in the fingers that hold them in place.
