 Pugs,

To test for leaks in the actuators simply disconnect both the front and back
hoses and hook up a vacuum pump. When you connect the pump to the front hose
the headlight should open. When you connect it to the rear hose it should
close. If the rear line fails to hold a vacuum then the diaphragm is leaking
and you need a new actuator. If the front fails to hold a vacuum then you
probably need a new seal. CAUTION: Do not pull a vacuum on the canister
without disconnecting both hoses otherwise you can damage the control valve.

If both front and back hold vacuum then your actuator is OK and the leak is
elsewhere. Most likely the control valve. They seem to fail quite often and
when they do you have a pretty good vacuum leak.
To check the control valve:
1. Disconnect all hoses
2. blow into the center port - air should come out of the bottom port and not
the top. Put your finger over the bottom port and blow again. No air should
come out anywhere.
3. connect a vacuum pump to the top diaphragm
4. Pull a vacuum on the valve.
5. blow into the center port again - air should only come out of the top port.
Put your finger over the top port and blow again. No air should come out
anywhere.

The most common problem with the valve is the rubber shaft seal goes bad and
leaks out of the very bottom opening.

Hey fellows thanks for all the comments on the headlight air system. on my
car
it always does the "wink" on start up, but also after shut down, the one
headlight always pops up and stays up until starting again. So I guess that
is
a vac issue. anyway this is an update I will consider if I get the car on the
road this summer. Pugs 756

B Maybe I am the odd man out, but I still have the original headlight system
and have never had a problem with it. There have been articles in The
Bricklin
about how to replace the seals, if they ever start to leak.

This is Terry's "air piston" system driven by the main air door system? B If
so, I've had it on my car since he did my resotration in 2001. Had a minor
failure once about 4 years ago and Terry replaced it with a new unit to
correct for a minor design issue. Have been extremely happy not to fuss with
the intricacies of the vacuum system that was OEM
