No, you're thinking of later SI cars. Around '64 or so the 4.2 engine became
optional (3.8 was the only engine available before then). It is an option
that virtually every car has. Simultaneously they started using the all
synchro tranny, which is a huge improvement over the previous stump puller.
The brakes were improved (also much needed), and they changed the dash from
hammered metal to vinyl. These later series 1 cars are the most desireable
cars. (Well, there are people who only collect 1961's, but aside from that,
I mean . . .)
1968 cars are identical to SII cars except that they used the SI tub (license
plate and taillight treatment is same as SI), the uncovered headlights don't
stick out quite as far as a SII car, the engine has a heat riser and exhaust
manifolds that are unique to 1968, and the rocker switches in the dash don't
have a little white square that you can see when they are turned on. Also
the seats and headrests use solid leather instead of the perforated leather
of the SII.
The 1968 cars have uncovered headlights and 2 Strombergs, so they are less
desireable than SI's. They might sell for marginally more because the taillight
treatment is a little nicer, but it should be the same general ballpark as SII.
