I still can't help but feel this problem is carburetor (or at least fuel
delivery) related.  I'm not familiar with the carb(s?)  you have but can
you squirt fuel directly into the throat?  You might try this and see if
the engine will run briefly.

I'm guessing the timing chain thing is a red herring.  It seems to me
you would have had a very rough running engine prior to it dying if the
timing chain had jumped a cog.
