Other than the cranking speed, cold starting problems would tend
to suggest checking out carb chokes and the like.
I too would suggest that engine oil might be a bit thick for winter
time. I don't know what's suggested for the Midget, but check a
manual for winter suggestions. If you're using a straigt viscosity
oil (say 30w ?) see if a multi-viscosity (say 10w30 ?) is suggested
for winter. It will definately allow the engine to crank faster
when cold -- helping it to start AND getting oil circulating to
critical parts faster.
Also you didn't mention whether you start the car with clutch
engaged or disengaged (I'll assume neutral in either case). If the
clutch is engaged and you're churning cold transmission oil that
could slow things quite a bit. This could also be the source of the
high pitched squeal -- cold transmissions often whine a bit as they
first start moving. This might also be an oil issue -- was the
correct transmission oil used? (there are several grades of gear
oil and some units even call out motor oil -- again check your manual).
