Have you checked the timing? Bad timing can generate loads of extra heat in
some circumstances. What about crud in the water passages in the block - it
depends where the temperature guage is - if it is in the block in a part
where flow is restricted by crud then the reading could be inaccurate or
there could be a local hotspot due to bad water flow. Do you get a high
guage reading or just boiling - if the latter, it could be a defective
pressure cap on the radiator/overflow bottle. Does the fan have a viscous
coupling (a sort of limited-slip arangement which reduces the fan speed at
higher RPM) - this may be faulty and start to slip too early. Also chech
the advance mechanism (see timing above)
