Chances are that your A has the same generator that my TR4A has. I'm
currently running 80/100 H4 halogens and the generator keeps up just
fine (but it's recently been rebuilt).

More likely, you'll have wiring or switch problems. When I installed
the 80/100s, I also installed relays on the high and low beam load
lines (as well as relays for the driving lights that I installed at the
same time). The wires going out to the headlamps are really too small
(looks like 14 or 16 gauge, I'd rather it was 12) but I didn't feel
like tearing into the wrapped portion of the wiring harness.

The leads to the switch, on the other hand, are 18 guage. They would have
melted.

I would heartily recommend going to the sealed beam replacement
halogens. You'll get a *huge* improvement in light output over what
you've got in the car now, with no significant additional electrical load.
