Dan Ness complains about his overdrive disengaging whenever he applies
any torque. While this *could* be a problem with the recently
discovered vacuum switch, I doubt it - you would *hear* the solenoid
click, just as you do when you engage the switch.

It sounds more like a hydraulic problem, or a worn overdrive clutch.
You said that you drained the fluid and refilled it. Did you drain the
overdrive unit, too? Did you clean out the filter? Did you find bits of
fiber and brass in the filter? 

If you didn't clean it out, do so. If you found fiber bits (think of
worn brake pads) then you almost certainly need a new clutch, which
means rebuilding the OD. (It's not hard, once you have the unit out.)
