I'm not on the british cars list anymore, but a friend forwarded me the
message.  So, I won't see anything that just gets posted to the list as
a reply to this message.

I will 99.8% guarantee you that your problem is the thermo-time switch.  Its
on the front right hand side of the engine if I remember correctly, screwed
into a cooling system pipe.

This switch operates the cold start injectors.  It is designed to close for
between 3 and 30 seconds depending on the temperature of the water it is
immersed in.

These switches are terribly unreliable, most XJS's seem to need them replaced
at any given time.  You can check operation of the switch with a simple test
light, look at the schematic to see which pin is the output.  If when starting
cold your light doesn't show juice for half a minute after starting (the
failure mode is for the switch to not close at all), you have found your
problem.  [Obviously you should also check that power and ground are getting
to the switch, just to eliminate corrosion, etc as a possibility.]
