Background:
July 4 1993, on my way to Chicago in my 1974 MGB, I threw a rod.
Turns out that I also cracked my crankshaft after driving the engine
for about a mile or two after first hearing strange noises and
observing a loss of power. Anyway, after examining several options,
I settled on having a local machine shop (with an excellent reputation)
repair the engine. I brought it in to their shop in September of 1993,
and today (1 year later!) I picked up the rebuilt engine. He welded
the crankshaft back together, and then machined it. All bearings (rod,
main, cam) were replaced, new rings, new lifters, new valves, new rods.
So, I'm looking forward to getting going again!
Now, what I need, is some advice/pointers on getting the engine
back into the car. I removed it (following the instructions in
my Haynes manual), but I'd still appreciate hearing some do's/dont's
before I attempt to get it back into place.
1) The machine shop already primed the engine with oil (something I didn't
know about!), so I don't have to worry about this.
2) I would like to paint the engine and transmission - I'm planning on
painting the engine block and transmission red, and the valve cover,
water pump, and pulleys black. Should I also paint the manifold
and oil pan, or just leave them alone?
3) I'm planning on re-inserting the engine and transmission as a unit,
is there anything I need to do before reattaching the engine to
the transmission? (A friend mentioned that I'll need a clutch
alignment tool...)
4) I remember the weird angle that the engine/tranny came out of the
car, I think I'll be able to get it back in fine...
5) What parts do I need to order now so that I have everything on
hand when I'm putting everything back together? Which gaskets?
Anything in particular I should replace?
6) Anything else?
