I'm going with early round mirrors, not the rare swept-back ones, and IMHO
mirrors belong on the fenders! (wings for some of you) Makes the car look
classic and more Japanese (also more European). I also like them slightly
convex. I hate having to look from side to side in the Miata to see behind
me - requires taking your eyes off the road.
I plan on placing them just aft of the hood opening so you can still lean
over the fender for engine fiddling. If they are centered over the wheels,
as on many cars, they tend to get in the way.
