Sounds like a classic case of poor or no grounding cables from the block to
the frame.

I believe the original gound wire was located at one of the starter studs
and run to the frame behind the left front wheel and it was not all that
heavy.   I replaced it with a battery cable and put another from the block
to the frame on the right side of the engine.  My choke cable too had
melted.   The PO thought it was an electrical fire and, as a reuslt, sold
me the 68 2000 with 27K original miles on it for $900.
