Actually, I said the text was opposite what the picture displayed. Both
settings can be correct, the small half-moon can be towards the front of
the engine, also the large half-moon can be towards the front of the
engine. It really doesn't matter. Same goes for #1 distributor position
facing rearward or frontward.
What is important, is that when the valves are oriented at 0 degrees BTDC
that the #1 distributor position is about at firing position. There are
several reasons why the gearing can be 180 degrees out, so you can't rely
on the same #1 distributor position for every engine. Best way to be sure
is to note the valve orientation.
For instance, on a 2000 remove the valve cover and look at the camshaft
lobes, both #1 intake and exhaust lobes should point upwards in a
rabbit-ear position when at 0 degrees BTDC while at #1 distributor
position. Rotor firing #1 spark plug cable to #1 spark plug at front of
engine; intake is done, compression stroke done, exhaust stroke yet to be
done.
