Did you remove the distributor tower? The distributor only fits in one
way, but the short shaft that drives the distributor fits in two ways
(one 180 degrees off, obviously). That shaft can only be removed if
the tower is removed - it won't come out by itself.

If you inject gasoline or starting fluid in the carbs when it sounds
like it's starving, does it continue to run, or does it die anyway? If
it keeps running, it IS starving for gas. Try replacing the fuel
filter (easy and cheap). Disconnect the line from the filter and put
it in a gas can. Crank the starter - does it shoot out gasoline into
the gas can? It may be time for a new fuel pump. Do you see/smell any
fuel leaks?

Do you have the glass bowl fuel filter? If so, make sure the seal
around the glass bowl is tight. If it leaks, your fuel pump will suck
air instead of gas, starving the car.
