Was it blue smoke? If the valve seals are going, increased manifold vacuum under
closed-throttle conditions can suck more oil past the seals. When you hit the
gas, the oil burns out and you get smoke. It was probably also smoking a bit
when you were coasting, but it's easy to miss.
