I am a true believer in heat shields. Cheap easy to make, and they work.
Make a double pattern so that you have a 1/2" air gap between the parts and
you have the best heat shield you can possibly imagine. An air gap just works
so good it 's hard to believe. Many many tests went into this observation and
statement.
Make it out of steel or aluminum and just bolt that puppy up to what ever your
favorite manifold and carb combination might be, you'll never find a better
heat shield. And , IT'S DEAD CHEAP.
It's like rain. If you have an umbrella the rain doesn't fall on you, if you
have a raincoat you hope and need to prove that it is waterproof.

I chose the easy way out. I use (really good) heat reflective material on
the bottom half of the intake runners.
