Certainly happens, I feel the same way about coils. They're fifteen bucks.
Any doubt, change them. For fuel pumps I like two centrifugal pumps with
check valves on the outlets and a good Carter regulator (I think it's
carter--not the big flat ones) even though I'm running a single pump right
now. Put a fuel pressure gauge where you can see it while driving. I've come
to like 4 pounds for Webers. Used to be hooked on three, but four seems
better if the needle and seat are in good shape.  

I don't rule anything out, but I always look at spark stuff first. And I
check the little stuff. Loose crimps on the coil wires, loose nuts, loose
ground strap, even weird stuff like the engine tilting under load and
putting the distributor cap close to the hood.
