I have no idea where you can find an 86mm piston.

Bill
To run in SOVREN Group 1, the TR3 has to comply with the 1962 PCS book. The
PCS allows optional Triumph piston #: 122208 and liner #: 122166 in which it
states increases the bore to 86mm. I know this rule because the competition
committee called me on it; they insisted I run 1991cc until I pointed out
the exception in the PCS. I'm rebuilding my engine right now, haven't
ordered pistons and sleeves yet but will probably try to get 86mm to comply.
Does anybody have a favorite (Venolia, JE, ??)
Mark

this raises a question. What bore are people using for TR3/4. I've heard
from
a few sources that a lot more 89mm pistons get sold than 87, and if folks
are
using them, is it because their sanctioning bodies permit it?

Right now I THINK I have 87.5 in Peyote, but I have to admit I'm not sure,
because I have multiple sets of every bore size from 83 to 89, and the last
time Peyote got pistons and sleeves it was one of those frantic at the track
deals (at PIR). To be on the safe side I told SOVREN last year I was using
89
so they moved my classification to DM, which of course it should be in even
if
it has 87mm.

And yes, unless my feeble brain has completely forgotten some mechanical
incident, Peyote went the whole year without a teardown. I don't plan to do
one this winter either. I may try to equal Joe Alexander's record for
leaving
my motor alone. If I hadn't knocked the nose off at Mission I would have had
a
whole year without any significant work at all other than the harmonic
balancer falling off. Not only that, I only bought one set of tires
(Hoosier
Speedsters) and they're still working pretty darn well. I ran some Hoosier
DOT
radials a few times, but they were left over from the previous year.

Bob Stanford was the super mechanic with US AIR (Allegheny Airlines at that
time). I had my car up at Chuck Redmond's garage to rebuild my engine and
learn from them how to do it. I haven't progressed much, since I am still
using
most of their techniques.

I remember when Bob would stay up all night pulling out his engine,
rebuilding it, and installing it by day break. Then he would leave from
there
and go
directly to work. The year he went to Riverside, he build another engine
with
87 mm pistons, to get rid of his 87 mm + 0.30 inch pistons. He said that a
certain number of cars get torn down at this event. This move probably cost
him
a little power.

"Sports Car" had a picture on the cover of the beginning of the EP race
coming down a hill. Bob's Morgan was on the inside of the track about half
way
back in the pack.
