so an 8" long, 500 lb per inch spring is a different wire size than a  
10" long, 500 lb/inch spring, assuming the metallurgy and coil diameter?

Ah, but it does.  Say for example you start with two 400 lb/in springs  
and
stack them together.  Apply 400 pounds, and the stack deflects by 2  
inches
(making it a 200 lb/in stack).  Separate the springs and they go from  
200
lb/in to 400 lb/in.
