An infrared gauge is like a camera, it sees heat instead of visible light
(different wave length)
Some people think with a laser pointer on this gauge you measure the point of
the laser b WRONG!
The laser shows only the direction you look at with the gauge but depending if
you have a wide lense or narrow lense view in your gauge you measureing about
an bigger area.
So if you want to measure SPOTS on a tire then hold the gauge directly on the
surface without any distance, then you do a spot measuring.

I wouldn't use an infrared gauge on tires if you are trying to get three
points on the tire.
You really need a probe.
