Back to your rear seal issue - one thing that was pointed out on the 
list a year or so ago that I did with my last rebuild is to drill 
additional drain holes through the rear main.  I drilled them 
parallel to the existing drain tube.  3/8" diameter.  Helps give the 
copious quantities of thick oil a place to go other than into the bellhousing.
