This is blasphemy, but except for a couple of stretches (Marin to Bodega Bay,
around Big Sur) I think the PCH is overrated. Half the view is (flat) water,
and you're almost always stuck behind some terrified and/or rubbernecking
tourist. There are a few inland roads off the PCH that are nice, however.
Once we were travelling through there, and one of the small towns on the
route (forget the name) asked us to be in their parade. Couple people came
up and told us they were voting for us for "Best in Show." That was fun.
The Columbia River Gorge, OTOH, has some varied and interesting
scenery.
