I don't understand your comment about the column being terribly high.

I moved mine slightly to the left.  This required that the big support brace 
between the firewall and the top of the dashboard be loosened and moved to 
the left. Also, the pinch bolt at the bottom of the steering gear box must 
be loosened to let the column move, and the 2 plates on the firewall must be 
loosened and moved.  I don't think there is any need to move the column up. 
Doing the above gives about 1/8" clearance to the rear jet.  Unfortunately, 
it may mean that the column is not perfectly centered as it comes out of the 
hole in the dashboard.
