Hi, Alan -

I don't know about BN1s and BN2s, but I have to disagree with your statement
for BJ8s.
You CAN get vapor lock if the float bowls get hot and boil the gas inside. I
found the carb heat shields to be critical to prevent that from happening.
With a damaged asbestos shield (my fault, I was a newbie), my car gave me fits
in the summer. It would stall at every stoplight and refuse to start until I
pulled off the hose to the carbs, switched on the ignition, and allowed the
gas to flow into a container. The hose was always dry when I pulled it off,
and once I pulled the float bowl lids as well and found the bowls dry.

Replacement of the heat shield solved the problem immediately, and for good.

  John -

John... You will only typically get vapor lock if fuel vaporises
before the fuel pump, not after... so the problem isn't in your engine
  compartment.

I think BN1s and BN2s originally came with a rubber covering for the
fuel pump to reduce the symptoms of vapor lock (this is the problem
area... it's not in the float bowls).

The best solution (which I've done on my BN1) is to get some header
wrap (cheap stuff) and wrap it around the entire exhaust pipe section
underneath the fuel pump. since I've done this I haven't had a
problem, plus it significanlty helps reduce the heat generation in
  this area anyway.

  Alan
